Q. What is a key number?

Answer

In general, headnotes identify points of law or rules in court opinions. Searching by a headnote helps you find the cases that cover the particular topic. Both Lexis and Westlaw use headnotes. In Westlaw, headnotes are called Key Numbers. To find case laws using headnotes, please see the Using Headnotes portion of our Case Law Research Tutorial and also our Digest, Headnotes and Key Numbers Research Guide. Always, feel free to contact the Reference Desk for assistance on case law research.
